Design for Belonging gathers city builders, community organizers, artists, and a diverse public to explore what it takes to create culturally responsive, thriving, resilient, and welcoming neighborhoods. We seek to amplify voices that are historically underrepresented in design planning efforts. We acknowledge the powerful impacts of the built environment, and we are also eager to expand the discussion to the less physical, more human-centered aspects of community development: cultural identity, social cohesion, collective psyche, and civic engagement. Topics of discussion will include:
Grace Kim | Principal Architect, Schemata Workshop & Commissioner, Seattle Planning Commission
Sergio Dávila | Coordinador de Diseño Industrial, Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Unidad Azcapotzalco
Martha Schwartz, DSc, FASLA, Hon FRIBA, Hon RDI, RAAR | Principal of Martha Schwartz Partners
Sharon Khosla | Principal, Fivedot Architecture & Central Area Design Review Board Member
Horatio Law | Public Artist, Portland, OR
Debora Juarez | Seattle City Councilmember
Ubax Gardheere | Equity Strategies Manager, Seattle Office of Planning and Community Development
Reception: 5:15 PM – 6:00 PM; Program: 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
