In Lima, Peru, 3 million slum occupants don’t have reliable access to clean water. Lima receives less than an inch of rain annually but does have a thick fog bank half the year. To find a renewable source of water, Architects Without Borders in joint venture with the University of Washington established the Informal Urban Communities Initiative (IUCI) and worked with Eliseo Collazos community members to build Fog Water Farms. The system uses innovative fog collection materials to capture water from the air. Volunteers constructed large capacity tanks to store water for irrigation during the dry season, household gardens and a public park with play court. AWB’s installation to showcases this unique project.
